2014 was a special celebratory year for Director of Golf at Fota Island Resort, Kevin Morris and Course Superintendent, Con O’Driscoll and all their teams as this summer was the third time that Fota Island Resort hosted the Irish Open, having previously been the chosen venue for the 2001 and 2002 Championships.
Over 100,000 visitors on site and many hundreds of thousands tuned in worldwide to enjoy four days of wonderful golf at Fota Island Resort, as the Irish Open finished in glorious sunshine on Sunday June 22nd.

The world of golf has changed immeasurably in the 12 years since Fota Island Resort last hosted the Irish Open thanks to the emergence of a host of talented young players, led by Rory McIlroy. Since those back-to-back Irish Opens in 2001 and 2002, so many significant investments have taken place at Fota Island Resort itself too, along with developments to the golf courses and the introduction of excellent training facilities, creating what is now a world-class, international golf venue.
A member of The Fota Collection, Fota Island Resort with its affordable 5-star luxury is relaxed, polished, comfortable, and nestled at the heart of a peaceful island, surrounded by gorgeous scenery and mature woodlands. A unique combination of very playable championship golf courses, luxurious 5-star hotel & impressive spa, residential lodges, and a sophisticated golf academy, Fota Island Resort has 123 luxurious en-suite rooms and 8 private penthouse suites, all with lovely views of the woodlands or golf courses.

Also in the magnificent grounds are the residential Lodges, with two, three, and four-bedroom lodges available to rent, an ideal mix of the traditional and the cutting-edge, a brilliant base for the perfect Irish stay.
Just nine kilometers from the thriving cosmopolitan city of Cork, and 20 minutes from Cork Airport, Fota Island Resort is centrally located for exploring lovely East Cork and the entire region, as well as one of Ireland’s best-loved golf courses.

Fota Island Resort is home to three distinctively challenging championship golf courses set amongst beautiful parkland scenery. Surrounded by tall oak trees, bathed in peace and quiet, there’s also the comfortable Clubhouse, the extensively stocked Pro Shop, and Fota Island Resort’s sophisticated Golf Academy. It’s always worth a visit, but with the Irish Open having been there this June, right now it is looking – and playing – its very best!
